The Ogun State Government has officially distanced itself from viral claims regarding the selection of a successor to the throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland. In a decisive move to maintain order and traditional integrity, the state has also announced an immediate suspension of the entire selection process.
The government’s reaction follows widespread rumors suggesting that the Ifa oracle had picked Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye as the next Awujale, and that the state administration had already given its seal of approval to this choice.
Government Rebuttal of “Oracle” Claims
In a press statement issued by the Honorable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, the government described the rumors as “false and misleading.” The statement clarified that the state does not endorse candidates through informal or spiritual processes, emphasizing that the selection must strictly follow established legal frameworks and recognized traditional customs.
”Any suggestion that the Government has adopted or approved a candidate through an oracle or any informal process is false… and should be disregarded by the public,” the statement read.
Why the Process Was Halted
Beyond denying the rumors, the state government confirmed that the process for filling the vacant stool has been temporarily halted. This decision was prompted by a wave of petitions and complaints filed by various stakeholders regarding the selection procedure.
The suspension aims to:
- Conduct a thorough review of all grievances.
- Ensure the selection remains transparent and lawful.
- Preserve the peace and sanctity of the Ijebu traditional institution.
A Call for Calm
The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite tension within the kingdom. The government reiterated its commitment to due process, stating that official updates will only be provided through formal government channels once the review is complete.
