EFCC Extradites Two to US Over Teen Sextortion and Suicide

​The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finalized the high-profile extradition of two Nigerian men, Mudashiru Afeez Olawale and Adebola Festus Adekunle, to the United States to face prosecution for alleged online financial sextortion schemes linked to the tragic deaths of two American teenagers.

​According to a statement issued by the anti-graft agency, the handover took place on Wednesday, August 26, through the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2. The operation followed intensive, separate investigations by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which targeted transnational syndicates utilizing Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) to entrap and blackmail vulnerable male minors aged 13 to 17.

​Investigators revealed that the suspects coerced their victims into paying money via cryptocurrencies, gift cards, and various money remitters. The extortion plots pushed two American minors—based in Mississippi and North Carolina—to die by suicide.

​Detailing the modus operandi in one of the cases, the EFCC noted that a 13-year-old boy was targeted on Instagram via direct messages proposing an exchange of nude photographs. The suspect subsequently leveraged the images to demand cash, threatening to flood the victim’s social media contacts with the explicit content. Chillingly, communications and financial demands continued even after the distressed minor explicitly communicated his intention to take his own life.

​Following actionable intelligence shared by U.S. authorities, the EFCC tracked down and arrested Adekunle locally. Meanwhile, the legal path to extraditing Olawale involved a rigorous courtroom battle.

​The FBI had pressed a seven-count indictment against Olawale, encompassing the sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death, enticement to engage in sexual activity, interstate threatening communications, and distribution of child pornography. Though the Federal High Court in Lagos initially denied the U.S. extradition application on June 10, 2024, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation successfully appealed the decision. On July 7, 2026, the Court of Appeal set aside the lower court’s ruling, clearing the legal hurdles for the transfer.

​Reacting to the development, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a stern warning against cross-border cybercriminals, emphasizing that anyone exploiting vulnerable children will be tracked down globally. FBI leadership also classified the suspects as high-value targets who spent years overseas before finally being brought onto U.S. soil to answer for the charges.

​The EFCC stated that the successful extradition highlights the expanding and effective synergy between Nigerian and American law enforcement agencies in dismantling transnational cybercrime networks.
