Prime Minister Andy Burnham has triggered a furious political backlash after jetting off for a foreign family holiday just two weeks after stepping into Downing Street.
Having formally assumed office on July 20 following a high-stakes political transition, Mr Burnham has chosen to step away from day-to-day operations for an overseas break with his wife, Marie-France van Hee, and their three children.
While Downing Street allies rushed to defend the Prime Minister, insisting that government business will continue uninterrupted and that he remains in constant contact with senior officials via phone and digital briefings, critics have seized on the timing.
The holiday has drawn scathing attacks from opposing parties. Reform UK chairman Lee Anderson did not mince words, accusing the newly minted premier of abandoning his post at the earliest opportunity.
”Two weeks into the job and Andy Burnham has already had enough,” Mr Anderson blasted. “After dropping a number of unfunded commitments… he’s bunked off for a jolly abroad. This isn’t a Prime Minister that’s serious about leading.”
Internal rumblings within Westminster have also highlighted a stark contrast with his predecessor. Insiders pointed out that former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer heavily restricted his downtime, famously scrapping leave plans during turbulent political climates. Allies of the former leadership team recalled how Sir Keir managed national crises without retreating to foreign beaches, contrasting sharply with the current administration’s early holiday.
Despite the mounting criticism, Number 10 maintains that the break is a brief, necessary pause to recharge after an grueling political calendar that saw Mr Burnham transition from his role as Mayor of Greater Manchester back into national parliament and subsequently into the highest office in the land. Government sources reiterate that executive functions, cabinet oversight, and security updates remain fully operational while the Prime Minister is away.
