From Rising Prospect to Rape Charge: Nigerian Basketballer Tobiloba’s American Dream Hits a Legal Wall

A journey built on talent, discipline and the pursuit of professional basketball has suddenly collided with the American justice system.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Nigerian basketball player Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega has been arrested in the United States over an alleged first-degree rape, leading to his immediate suspension from Jacksonville State University’s men’s basketball programme.

The 21-year-old is currently being held at the Calhoun County Jail pending a bond hearing, according to court records.

Arrest Follows Serious Allegation

Authorities allege that the incident occurred on Wednesday. According to the arrest warrant, Adegboyega is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a woman through what investigators described as “forcible compulsion,” an allegation that forms the basis of the first-degree rape charge under Alabama law.

University Suspends Basketball Player

Following the arrest, Jacksonville State University confirmed that Adegboyega has been suspended indefinitely from all basketball-related activities.

Court records also indicate that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration hold on the Nigerian student-athlete, a development that could carry immigration consequences independent of the criminal proceedings.

A Career Built Across Multiple Colleges

Adegboyega had only recently committed to Jacksonville State after spending the 2025–2026 season at California Baptist University.

Before that, he played two seasons at the University of South Florida after initially signing with Kennesaw State in 2022 following his graduation from Grand View Christian High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

Standing seven feet tall, the centre has featured in 27 collegiate games, making five starts while averaging 0.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

Although his statistics remained modest, his size and athletic profile continued to attract opportunities within the American college basketball system.

Presumption Of Innocence Remains

Under American law, the allegation remains exactly that, an allegation. Adegboyega is presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
