The Oyo State Government has officially cleared the air regarding recent claims surrounding the disbursement of retirees’ gratuities, dismissing reports of a “suspension” or “mismanagement” of funds as fake news.
The Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, clarified that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde is currently tackling a massive backlog of unpaid entitlements inherited from as far back as 2008. Speaking on the matter, Adelabu noted that recent discussions with retiree interest groups were misrepresented in the media, leading to unnecessary panic among senior citizens.
A New Era of Financial Commitment
The state has significantly scaled its efforts to clear these debts. Starting in January 2026, the monthly allocation for gratuities was tripled from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion. This fiscal boost is already yielding tangible results:
- Massive Outreach: Over 500 beneficiaries received their full payments in January 2026 alone.
- Progress on Backlogs: Payments have progressed significantly, with many retirees who became eligible in 2019 already receiving their checks.
- Process Optimization: The Ministry has re-strategized its payment structure to ensure faster, more transparent disbursements.
Addressing Delays
For retirees from the 2019 batch who have yet to receive their funds, the Commissioner attributed the delay to documentation hurdles and internal processing challenges rather than a lack of funds. He assured the public that the Ministry is working around the clock to resolve these administrative bottlenecks.
”The Governor remains committed to the welfare of those who served this state,” Adelabu stated. “We have moved from the 2008 backlog up to 2019 in a consistent, ongoing process. We ask for continued patience as we ensure every legitimate claim is settled.”
