Outcry in Badagry Over Police Rejection of Suspected Scavenger-Thief

​BADAGRY, LAGOS — Residents of the historic coastal town of Badagry are questioning the boundaries of police discretion following a bizarre incident in the Marina area, where local law enforcement allegedly refused to detain a suspected burglar on the grounds of perceived mental instability.

​The controversy centers on a self-acclaimed scavenger, Ugo, who was apprehended by community members on Tuesday afternoon after allegedly trespassing into a private residential compound and pillaging a resident’s purse.

​The homeowner, identified as Mrs. Juliana, recounted a harrowing experience to correspondents. According to the victim, she was resting in her room at approximately 1:00 p.m. when she opened her eyes to find an intruder kneeling directly beside her personal belongings.

​”He immediately pleaded with me not to shout,” Mrs. Juliana recalled, detailing the tense moments before she defied the warning and raised a public alarm.

​Faced with imminent exposure, the suspect bolted from the bedroom, scaled the compound’s perimeter fence, and attempted a frantic escape. Vigilant neighbors, alerted by the commotion, gave chase, successfully cornering the fleeing suspect before marching him toward the authorities.

​A twist in the investigation emerged at the point of custody. While a search yielded two raw fish hidden inside his pockets, the missing sum of N10,000 from the victim’s purse was conspicuously absent from his person. More confounding to the complainant, however, was the reaction of officers at the Badagry Police Station.

​Rather than processing the case, law enforcement personnel allegedly dismissed the complaint, asserting that the suspect’s physical appearance and demeanor pointed to mental impairment rather than criminal intent.

​The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Jude Unwokolo, defended the station’s stance, maintaining that officers on the ground visually assessed the suspect and concluded he was mentally unstable, rendering formal interrogation unnecessary. Countering this narrative, however, a correctional officer who interacted with Ugo prior to the police handover insisted that the suspect displayed cognitive coherence. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the official noted that the suspect articulated his background clearly, identifying himself as a native of Badagry who earned a living through scavenging.

​The police’s refusal to take formal statements or launch an inquiry has left local stakeholders deeply unnerved. Residents are now demanding clarity on procedural transparency, questioning whether subjective visual assessments should legally supersede actionable criminal complaints, particularly in matters involving domestic safety and missing property.

​As the debate intensifies across the community, the missing N10,000 remains unaccounted for, and the suspect’s current whereabouts continue to be shrouded in uncertainty.
