Blackpool Surgeon Who Called Junior Staff ‘Fresh Meat’ Jailed for Sexual Assaults

LANCASHIRE, UK — A former senior heart surgeon at Blackpool Victoria Hospital has been jailed for six years after being convicted of sexually assaulting five female colleagues over a five-year period, in a case that exposed what prosecutors described as a toxic and sexualised culture within the hospital’s cardiovascular unit.

Amal Krishna Bose, 55, of Lancaster, was convicted at Preston Crown Court of 12 counts of sexual assault relating to offences committed between 2017 and 2022, while serving as head of the hospital’s cardiovascular surgery service; he has exhausted his defence at trial, where he dismissed his conduct as “only flirting” and “workplace banter.”

One victim told the court she was groped as she scrubbed in for surgery; another said Bose pulled down her top to expose her chest and bra, while a further victim described him groping her breast as he reached to take a pen from her pocket.

Several women said he stood uncomfortably close to them and referred to female staff, including at least one directly, as “fresh meat.”

The sentencing

Sentencing Bose, Judge Unsworth told him he had shown no genuine remorse toward his victims and had brought them “degradation and humiliation,” describing him as having used his “exalted position” to facilitate the offending.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Sacha Coyne of the CPS’s North West Rape and Serious Sexual Offence Unit said Bose had been in a position of trust that he abused by creating a toxic environment and sexually assaulting five women who worked at the hospital.
