“Our Children Are Safe”: IGP Assures Parents as Police Launch Nationwide School Security Programme

The Nigeria Police Force has moved to strengthen security around schools nationwide, with Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu assuring parents that their children are safe.

Disu gave the assurance as the Police Community Relations Committee launched its Safe School Programme in Abuja on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Represented at the launch by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, the IGP said the police had taken responsibility for improving security around schools across the country.

He said the Force had developed internal warning and response mechanisms to enable schools to quickly alert security authorities when they detect emerging threats.

The programme comes amid concerns over attacks on vulnerable locations, including schools and places of worship.

10,000 volunteers, CCTV deployment

The PCRC said it would mobilise 10,000 volunteers across the country to work with the police, community leaders, vigilante groups and other stakeholders.

The initiative will give particular attention to schools in rural and remote communities considered vulnerable to criminal attacks.

The committee has also started deploying CCTV cameras.

In the Federal Capital Territory, the national PCRC is providing three cameras, while the FCT chapter is expected to provide another three.

The plan is to expand surveillance coverage to schools across the six area councils before extending the model nationwide.

PCRC National Chairman Alhaji Mogaji Olaniyan said the programme was designed to make community members more directly involved in protecting schools.

He also called for individuals and organisations to support the programme with CCTV cameras and other resources.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the police had earlier circulated a security alert warning of possible attacks on schools, places of worship, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations following intelligence on the movement of armed elements.

The new programme is therefore being presented not only as a surveillance effort but also as an early-warning and community-response system.

Olaniyan urged communities to remain alert and report suspicious activity to security authorities, stressing that school protection could not be achieved by the police alone.

The initiative is expected to strengthen intelligence gathering, surveillance and rapid response around educational institutions as schools prepare for continued academic activities.

For parents, the assurance from the police will now be measured against how effectively these new mechanisms translate into visible security around schools, particularly in vulnerable communities, ValidViewNetwork reports.
