Otti Moves to Turn Aba into Global Manufacturing Brand

​ABA, NIGERIA – The Abia State Government has launched a strategic initiative to transition the state from a local production center into a globally recognized manufacturing brand. This move is part of a broader vision by Governor Alex Otti to reposition Aba as the premier hub for fashion, garment, and leather production in Africa.

​Speaking on Tuesday at the flag-off of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Competitiveness and Industrial Productivity Programme (MCIPP) Quality Assurance Assessors Training, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, emphasized that the administration is “deliberate” about quality standardization.

​Standardizing “Made in Aba”

​The training, held at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in Aba, aims to equip assessors with the skills to ensure local products meet international benchmarks. According to Ajagba, the initiative is a “bold step” toward ensuring that goods produced in the Enyimba City can compete on the world stage.

​“The state government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for enterprise growth through infrastructure development, policy support, access to finance, and quality standardization,” Ajagba stated.

​The programme is a collaborative effort involving Ethnocentrique Limited and the Mastercard Foundation. This partnership follows the success of the 2025 “Fashion Future Programme,” which saw 2,000 trainees graduate, and precedes the upcoming Fashion Games 2026 (AHIA 360) scheduled for late April at the Enyimba International Stadium.

​A Growing Industrial Ecosystem

​Adedapo Conde, the MCIPP Team Lead, noted that the training is critical for strengthening the state’s “skills ecosystem.” The goal is to transform Aba into a structured export hub, moving beyond informal production to a system that attracts international buyers and investors.

​Recent milestones in Governor Otti’s industrialization drive include:

• ​The Aba Commercial Smart City (ACSC): A project expected to generate 125,000 direct and indirect jobs.
• ​Manufacturing Expansion: The recent commissioning of the Ultimum Limited beverage plant in the Osisioma industrial cluster.

• ​Sports Merchandising: The development of a Special Sports Economic Zone to harness Aba’s garment-making capacity for mass-market sportswear.

​The ceremony concluded with the presentation of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and SMEDAN certificates to several MSME owners, a move designed to formalize local businesses and facilitate their access to credit and global markets.
