Ondo Suspends 27 Students Over Indiscipline

​AKURE — The Ondo State Government has placed 27 students from three prominent public secondary schools in Akure on indefinite suspension, citing persistent gross misconduct and unruly behavior.

​The affected students hail from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas College, and CAC Grammar School. The suspension, announced by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, marks a significant escalation in the state’s efforts to curb a rising tide of indiscipline in public institutions.

​A Zero-Tolerance Stance

​Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Akindele Ige, who personally oversaw the enforcement of the suspension, stated that the decision followed repeated reports of bullying, fighting, truancy, and the circulation of indecent videos on social media.

​“The ministry maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward behaviors that undermine the integrity of our educational system,” Dr. Ige said. “Schools are centers for character formation and academic excellence, and we remain committed to ensuring they remain safe and conducive to learning.”

​Failure of Repeated Warnings

​Despite ongoing consultations and multiple warnings issued to school administrators and stakeholders, the ministry noted that some students continued to violate the state’s Code of Conduct. Dr. Ige emphasized that these actions not only disrupt the academic environment but also tarnish the image of the state’s education sector.

​Under the terms of the indefinite suspension, the students are strictly prohibited from entering their respective school premises or participating in any school-related activities until further notice. Their cases are currently being reviewed by the respective school disciplinary committees in collaboration with the ministry.

​Call for Parental Involvement

​The ministry’s statement, issued by Mrs. Bisi Lawani, Head of the Media Unit, called on parents and guardians to play a more proactive role in monitoring their children’s activities. The government stressed that nurturing discipline is a shared responsibility between the home and the school, urging families to partner with authorities to maintain order.

​This latest disciplinary action follows a similar move in late June, when the state government withheld the WASSCE results and testimonials of 17 students from these same three schools for participating in a viral “sign-out” celebration that involved the destruction of school uniforms and inappropriate conduct.

​The ministry has vowed to continue its routine inspection visits to ensure strict compliance with school regulations, warning that any further acts of misconduct will be met with decisive disciplinary consequences.
