Ogun Hostel Robbery: Police Chase Leaves 11 iPhones and Laptop Behind

The robbers allegedly had seconds to make a choice: run or carry the loot.

According to the police, they ran.

A bag containing 11 iPhones, an HP laptop and other belongings was allegedly abandoned after officers arrived at a student hostel in Ewekoro, Ogun State, following a distress call.

The Ogun State Police Command said two suspects, Waris Dauda and Tiamiyu Abiodun, were arrested following the incident in the Eruku/Agbon area of Ewekoro Local Government Area.

Police said the robbery occurred at about 2:40am on Sunday, September 13. Officers from the Ewekoro Division reportedly raced to the hostel after receiving the distress call.

According to the command, the suspects abandoned their loot after sighting the approaching police team and attempted to escape.

The officers pursued them and arrested two suspects. A search of the abandoned bag reportedly yielded 11 assorted iPhones, an HP laptop and clothing.

Some victims have reportedly identified the recovered property as theirs.

But the investigation produced another allegation. Police said the gang allegedly forced one of the victims to transfer ₦200,000 into an account during the robbery.

Detectives subsequently visited the hostel, documented evidence of forced entry and secured the recovered items.

The residences of the two suspects were also searched, although police said no additional incriminating items were recovered.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the suspects and recovered property have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The investigation will have to establish the identities and roles of everyone involved, determine how the recovered items were obtained and verify the alleged financial transfer.

For students, the incident is another reminder of the vulnerability of hostels, especially those located outside tightly controlled institutional environments.

For the police, however, the bigger responsibility now begins after the arrests.

A suspect is not a criminal simply because police arrested him. Evidence must establish the case, and a court must determine guilt.

Justice for the victims therefore requires both effective policing and respect for due process.

Ogun residents deserve security, but they also deserve a justice system in which evidence, not assumption, determines guilt, ValidViewNetwork reports.
