​NEW YORK — In a landmark policy shift designed to prioritize human connection and safeguard cognitive development, New York City has instituted a sweeping one-year moratorium banning student-facing generative artificial intelligence in public schools from early childhood education programs through the eighth grade.

​Announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels, the unprecedented restrictions impact roughly 600,000 students across the United States’ largest public school district. Under the new framework, all generative AI tools and psychological companion chatbots are strictly prohibited for younger learners, while personal digital device usage and daily screen times are heavily curtailed.

​The crackdown arrives in response to mounting pressure from educators and parents warning against “cognitive surrender”—the dangerous abdication of critical reasoning to software. While high school students will maintain limited, regulated access to specialized AI platforms alongside mandatory AI literacy modules, officials emphasized that technology must serve human learning rather than replace it.
