Patient Accuses FMC Abeokuta Doctors of Assault and Neglect

​A routine medical visit to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State, escalated into a bitter dispute after a patient with a history of cerebral haemorrhage accused hospital doctors of medical neglect, verbal assault, and dragging him and his wife to a police station.

​The patient, Adedamola Adetayo, alleged that his four-hour ordeal on Sunday, August 30, 2026, exposed a troubling breakdown in professional duty and empathy at the tertiary health institution. Adetayo, who stated he had been battling a steady deterioration in his health for two weeks, explained that he visited the emergency unit because his scheduled neurology appointment had been fixed weeks away for September 15.

​According to Adetayo, physical weakness forced him to sit on an empty chair inside the emergency ward after initial entry restrictions by security. A standoff ensued when a doctor insisted he walk outside the gate before he could be assessed. The situation reportedly deteriorated when a senior resident doctor intervened, resulting in a volatile confrontation that bypassed medical evaluation entirely.

​”Not once did they take my vitals except when the police had arrived and they needed to be sure, perhaps, that I was fit enough to be locked in a police cell,” Adetayo recounted, alleging that his wife was also manhandled during the altercation and her mobile phone seized.

​Both Adetayo and his wife were subsequently marched to the office of the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Raheem Quadri, where senior medical personnel spent hours pursuing a case against them rather than tending to emergencies. Adetayo drew grim parallels to a tragic family loss in 2009, asserting that vulnerable patients risk losing their lives without personal connections or external leverage.

​In response to the growing public outcry, the management of FMC Abeokuta confirmed the incident through a statement signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, O. A. Olatunji. While omitting specific details regarding the police involvement or assault accusations, the hospital announced that an investigation committee had been constituted to probe the circumstances and enforce appropriate sanctions against any party found culpable.
