NSCDC Orders High-Level Probe as Dozens of Suspected Illegal Miners Die in Niger Custody

​MINNA — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has ordered an immediate, high-powered investigation following the deaths of multiple detained suspects arrested during a clampdown on illegal mining operations in Niger State.

​The sweep, executed by the Niger State Command between September 15 and 16, 2026, targeted illicit mining enclaves around the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto axes. While the operation initially yielded scores of arrests and the recovery of sundry exhibits, the situation took a tragic turn on Thursday morning, September 17, when several detainees were found dead inside custody.

​While hospital sources and local reports place the number of fatalities at 33—sparking localized protests by restive youths and family members in areas like Maitumbi and M.I. Wushishi—security and health authorities have yet to officially ratify the exact death toll, attributing the sudden tragedy to a suspected swift-moving disease outbreak. Unconfirmed medical intelligence from the General Hospital, Minna, where the bodies and other affected detainees were rushed, points toward a possible diphtheria outbreak.

​In response to the mounting public concern, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has deployed a specialized investigative panel headed by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation.

​National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commandant Babawale Afolabi, noted that the panel has been directed to scrutinize every facet of the incident. The team’s terms of reference include evaluating the physical condition of the suspects upon initial arrest, reviewing the duration and standard of their detention, auditing facility health conditions, and tracking the promptness of medical interventions.

​The Corps emphasized that linking the sudden fatalities to any particular illness remains strictly speculative until comprehensive laboratory and post-mortem examinations are concluded by health authorities. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for autopsies and forensic determination of the real cause of death.

​Expressing profound condolences to the bereaved families, the Commandant General has ordered prioritized healthcare delivery for remaining detainees and mandated safety protocols for security personnel who handled the suspects.

​The NSCDC has appealed for public restraint, assuring residents that while the war against economic sabotage and illegal mining remains total, the agency stays unbendingly committed to the protection of human dignity and fundamental rights within its holding facilities.
