Sir Ian Wood, one of Scotland’s most influential business leaders, billionaires, and philanthropists who fundamentally reshaped the UK’s offshore energy industry, has died at the age of 84.
He passed away peacefully at his home in Aberdeen, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a profound legacy that dictated the economic heartbeat of north-east Scotland for over half a century.
From Family Trawler to Global Energy Giant
Born in Aberdeen in 1942, Sir Ian took the helm of his family’s traditional marine and fishing enterprise in 1967. Against initial skepticism from his father, John, he spearheaded a bold strategic pivot during the 1980s and 1990s to serve the rapidly expanding North Sea oil and gas sector.
That calculated risk birthed the Wood Group, transforming a modest local operation into a premier international energy services titan. Under his visionary leadership as chief executive until 2006 and executive chairman until his retirement in 2012, the firm floated on the London Stock Exchange and expanded to employ over 42,000 personnel across more than 50 countries. At its market peak, the company was valued at more than £5 billion.
First Minister John Swinney led national tributes, describing Sir Ian as a giant of enterprise who helped shape modern Scotland.
”Through his leadership of Wood Group, he helped transform a modest family business into a global energy services company, playing a pivotal role in the growth of the North Sea oil and gas industry and establishing Scotland as a world-renowned centre of energy expertise,” Mr. Swinney stated.
A Legacy Marked by Resilience and Industry Advocacy
Sir Ian’s career was inextricably tied to the triumphs and tragedies of the North Sea. He was deeply impacted by the devastating 1988 Piper Alpha disaster, which claimed the lives of 167 men, including 39 Wood Group employees. In the aftermath, he made personal visits to grieving families and became an unyielding champion of enhanced offshore safety protocols.
Even well into his retirement, Sir Ian remained an outspoken advocate for the energy sector, frequently warning about the economic vulnerabilities tied to rapid transitions, windfall taxes, and shifts in government exploration policies.
Dedicated Philanthropy and Community Impact
Beyond corporate boardrooms, Sir Ian channeled immense energy into civic and charitable causes. Alongside his family, he established The Wood Foundation in 2007, dedicating substantial personal wealth to educational initiatives, entrepreneurial training in Scotland, and agricultural development and conservation projects across East Africa.
His monumental contributions earned him a knighthood in 1994 for services to the oil and gas industry, followed by an appointment to the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s highest and most ancient chivalric honor.
Family Tributes
Sir Ian is survived by Lady Helen, his wife of 55 years, their three sons—Nic, Graham, and Garreth—and seven grandchildren.
In a heartfelt statement, his relatives remembered his core values beyond the public glare:
