A Nigerian woman was arrested in the central Indian city of Indore on Sunday, 30 August 2026, after police say they found 57.18 grammes of cocaine, valued at more than 2.9 million Indian rupees, roughly N40.9 million, concealed in a transparent bag she was carrying while travelling from Mumbai.
The woman, identified by police as Emmanuel Joy, a Lagos resident, has not been convicted of any offence, and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in an Indian court; she was remanded in custody following a court appearance as investigations continue.
How the arrest unfolded
According to a report by News18 Hindi, cited by multiple outlets, officers of the Chandan Nagar Police were on patrol near an IT park in the Sinhasa area of Indore when they noticed Joy carrying a black bag and grew suspicious.
Findings by ValidViewNetwork show that when questioned, her responses reportedly failed to satisfy the officers, prompting a search conducted in the presence of female personnel, which allegedly turned up the cocaine hidden inside a clear pouch within the bag.
Her arrest reportedly came amid heightened security checks in the area ahead of the Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami festival celebrations.
What she allegedly told investigators
Checks by ValidViewNetwork show Joy was said to be travelling from Mumbai to Indore at the time of her arrest, allegedly to supply the cocaine to buyers in the city.
During questioning, she reportedly told investigators she had purchased the drugs cheaply with the intention of reselling them at a higher price in Indore, an account police say they are still working to independently verify.
She was reportedly residing in the Bandra East area of Mumbai, where she worked at a hair salon alongside her sister.
The wider investigation
A case has been filed against Joy under Sections 8 and 21 of India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, provisions covering possession and dealing in controlled substances.
Investigators have reportedly begun examining her passport, visa and immigration records, alongside her mobile phone and other digital evidence, in an effort to trace who supplied her with the drugs and who her intended buyers in Indore may have been.
Police say the case forms part of a broader effort to map out what they suspect could be a wider trafficking network operating between Mumbai and smaller Indian cities.
A recurring headache for Nigeria’s image abroad
Findings by ValidViewNetwork show Joy’s arrest is far from an isolated case: Indian police across multiple states, from Karnataka to Maharashtra, have in recent months reported a string of similar arrests involving Nigerian nationals accused of trafficking cocaine and other narcotics, using methods ranging from bread loaves to children’s travel bags to conceal the drugs.
