Nigerian Teenager Dies in Tragic UK Lake Incident

​Lincoln, UK – The community of Lincoln is in mourning following the death of 16-year-old Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, affectionately known as Tomiwa, who passed away after getting into difficulty at Swanholme Lakes earlier this month.

​Tomiwa, described by his grieving parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, as a “vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man,” was rescued from the water on the evening of Thursday, 9 July 2026. Despite initial signs of response to emergency treatment at the scene, he sadly succumbed to his condition at the hospital later that night, with his parents by his side.

​A Life of Impact and Faith

​Tomiwa was widely celebrated as a devoted son, a protective older brother to his three siblings, and an active participant in his local church youth ministry. A talented athlete, he represented both Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC with pride and discipline.

​”Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy, and compassion,” his parents shared in a heartfelt statement. “Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful. He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him”.

​Urgent Calls for Water Safety

​Tomiwa’s passing marks the second tragedy at the Swanholme Lakes nature reserve in just seven weeks, following the death of 15-year-old Declan Sawyer on 24 May 2026.

​In response to these heartbreaking events, the City of Lincoln Council has fast-tracked a pilot safety programme. Starting Friday, 17 July, new wardens began patrolling the lakes to discourage swimming and provide education on the severe, often unseen dangers of the water.

​Council leader Naomi Tweddle reiterated the gravity of the situation, noting that the former gravel pits are “never designed for swimming” and possess unpredictable conditions beneath the surface.

​Lincolnshire Police have confirmed that a file will be passed to the coroner to conduct a formal investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Authorities continue to urge the public to prioritize water safety and to report any instances of dangerous swimming or anti-social behaviour to ensure the protection of the community.
