NFF CRISIS: Gusau, Entire Executive Committee Resign Amid Corruption Allegations and World Cup Failures

A House in Ruins

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned. So has the general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi. So have all 11 members of the executive committee. In one sweeping moment, the entire leadership of Nigerian football walked away.

ValidViewNetwork understands that Gusau made the announcement at a press conference at the NFF Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

His tenure was set to expire in just 34 days. He said he reached the decision “after consultation with family, friends and stakeholders”. He also “advised” other board members to “also resign”. They did.

Why Now?

The timing is no coincidence. The pressure had been building for months, years, even. The Super Eagles have now failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups.

For a nation that once graced the global stage with the likes of Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu, this is an unprecedented decline.

Then came the hammer blow; the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s beloved nine-time African champions, lost to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, then fell to South Africa in a World Cup play-off.

For the first time since the tournament began in 1991, Nigeria will not be at the Women’s World Cup.

But it wasn’t just the results.

A fact-finding committee set up after the Wafcon exit uncovered allegations that NFF board members were influencing team selection and that officials and coaches were basing call-ups on financial gain rather than performance.

Meanwhile, attention has focused on a N17 billion ($12.66 million) intervention fund reportedly approved by President Tinubu in 2024 to settle outstanding payments to national teams.

The Department of State Services had reportedly been investigating the matter, adding to the pressure on the embattled board members.

What Happens Next?

The NFF has convened an emergency congress in Abuja to determine its next steps. The current uncertainty casts doubt over elections scheduled for September.

Some stakeholders are already calling for a FIFA-backed normalisation committee to oversee the transition.Former internationals including John Obi Mikel, Jay-Jay Okocha and Segun Odegbami have argued that meaningful progress will require a complete break from the cycle of familiar administrators who have overseen years of underperformance.

ValidViewNetwork further gathered that President Tinubu’s office has ordered “comprehensive reform” of the country’s football administration.

Whether the crisis becomes an opportunity for long-awaited structural change, or descends into further chaos — remains to be seen.
