Minnesota lawmaker killer gets life

He arrived in the dead of night wearing a disguise of authority, but what followed was not a routine check — it was a calculated assault that left a Minnesota political family shattered and a state reeling. Vance Boelter will now spend the rest of his life behind bars after a federal judge imposed two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years for the killings of Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the attempted murders of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

Midnight violence

According to court filings and reporting from the sentencing, Boelter spent months tracking his intended victims before driving to their homes in the middle of the night dressed as a police officer. Prosecutors said he first struck at the Hoffmans’ home, where he shot and critically wounded the senator and his wife, before moving on to the Hortmans’ residence in Brooklyn Park.

There, the violence turned fatal. Boelter posed as law enforcement, gave a fake name and badge number, and then opened fire on Mark Hortman before forcing his way inside and killing Melissa Hortman as she tried to flee. The family’s dog, Gilbert, was also killed in the attack, adding another cruel layer to a night already marked by terror.

Courtroom reckoning

The sentencing capped a case that prosecutors described as an “attack on democracy,” arguing that Boelter did not simply commit murder but targeted elected officials to intimidate Minnesota’s government. Boelter had pleaded guilty in June to six counts, a deal that removed the possibility of a death-penalty fight and ensured the most severe sentence available short of execution.

At the hearing, survivors and relatives confronted the man responsible for the bloodshed, turning the courtroom into a place of grief, anger, and hard-won testimony. Reporting on the proceeding described the sentence as final in practical terms, since federal prison offers no parole.
