Tragic Fall Claims Young Man’s Life in Ogbomoso

​A routine inspection turned fatal in Oyo State when a 25-year-old man lost his life after plunging into a soakaway pit at an abandoned property in Ogbomoso.

​The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening in the Kinnira area, directly opposite the Zion Christian Academy School, located within the Ogbomoso North Local Government Area.

​Fatal Misstep at Abandoned Site

​According to official reports, the unnamed victim had entered the deserted premises to inspect water levels in nearby storage tanks. While attempting to navigate the terrain around the tanks, he reportedly lost his balance and slipped into the adjacent, unsecured soakaway.

​The Oyo State Fire Services Agency was alerted to the emergency at approximately 7:41 pm on Friday by a local resident, John Onigbinde.

​Rescue Turn Recovery

​Responding to the distress call, a rescue team led by Commander Dairo was immediately dispatched to the scene.

​Moroof Akinwande, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, confirmed the details of the operation in a statement released on Saturday.

​”The rescue team immediately swung into action by applying all necessary rescue knots and operational procedures,” Akinwande stated.

​Despite the swift deployment and successful extraction of the victim from the pit, the young man could not be saved. His lifeless body was recovered from the depths of the structure and subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Owode Division, for further investigation.

​A Warning to the Public

​In the wake of the tragedy, the Oyo State government has issued a stern warning to residents regarding the dangers of poorly managed infrastructure.

​Akinwande urged property owners and community members to exercise extreme caution around soakaways, open wells, and uncompleted buildings. He emphasized that uncovered openings and abandoned sites present severe safety hazards to the public and must be properly secured to prevent future loss of life.
