Sanwo-Olu Unveils Hamzat, Sonayon-James Ticket for Lagos 2027

​LAGOS — Ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially presented his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as the standard-bearer for the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as his running mate.

​In an official statement released on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu framed the joint ticket as a strategic move to secure sustainable governance, continuity, and progressive leadership for the state.

​”The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” Sanwo-Olu stated, emphasizing that the team reflects the intrinsic strength, diversity, and future-forward ambitions of Lagos State.

​The announcement follows a series of high-level political developments within the ruling party. Dr. Hamzat recently secured the APC governorship ticket after winning a direct primary across the state’s wards. His candidacy has garnered major institutional backing, including formal endorsements from President Bola Tinubu, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC)—the apex decision-making body of the Lagos APC—and 57 local council chairmen.

​Describing his deputy as a steadfast partner in the administration’s development agenda, Sanwo-Olu noted that Dr. Hamzat has consistently demonstrated the competence and dedication required to manage the complex governance structure of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

​The choice of Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as the deputy governorship candidate adds significant strategic weight to the ticket. A respected sustainability professional and the current Lagos APC Deputy Woman Leader, Sonayon-James is widely recognized for her grassroots advocacy and youth empowerment initiatives. Party leadership, led by State Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, indicated that her selection was the result of extensive consultations aimed at balancing administrative experience with robust grassroots appeal and gender inclusion.
