A newborn baby cannot explain hunger.
A newborn cannot understand rejection.
A newborn cannot run from danger.

That is why stories of babies abandoned beside roads, in cartons, bushes, drainage channels and other exposed places are among the most painful reminders of how vulnerable human life can become.

The latest case involves a woman identified as Soliat, who police said admitted abandoning her newborn after giving birth because she could not afford to care for the child.

But the story became more complicated when she reportedly told police that she had been raped by four men in Keffi and had hidden the pregnancy because she feared her family would reject her.

She said she had attempted to terminate the pregnancy but was unsuccessful. After giving birth, she reportedly placed the baby in a carton and left the child by the roadside, remaining nearby and watching until a passer-by found the baby and took the child to the police.

The police investigation will determine the facts and any legal consequences. But the human question is larger.

How does a woman reach that point? Pregnancy does not begin at childbirth. There are decisions before conception.

There are decisions after sex. There are decisions when pregnancy is discovered.

And there are options after birth.

Young people need accurate information about contraception and responsible sexual behaviour.
Adults need access to reproductive healthcare.
Women facing an unintended pregnancy need somewhere safe to seek counselling and medical care rather than hiding until childbirth.

And a woman who cannot raise a newborn should know that abandonment is not the only option.

There are alternatives
Family members can sometimes help. Trusted community organisations can provide support.
Health facilities can connect vulnerable mothers with social services. State social-welfare authorities can intervene.

And Nigeria has a national framework for alternative care of children who cannot safely remain with their biological families.

UNICEF’s national guidelines recognise foster care, adoption and other forms of alternative care as ways of protecting children who are deprived of appropriate family care.

That means the conversation should not end with “she could not afford the baby”.

Poverty is real. Fear is real. Rape is real.
Stigma is real.

But so is the child’s right to protection.

The babies we keep finding

Nigeria already faces enormous child-protection challenges. UNICEF says violence against children remains widespread and that only a small proportion of children who experience violence receive support.

The organisation also identifies poverty, inadequate social protection, poor access to services and other vulnerabilities as major barriers to children’s wellbeing.

That is why baby abandonment should not be treated only as a crime story. It is also a social-welfare story. It is a reproductive-health story.
It is a poverty story. It is a child-protection story.

And sometimes it is a story of sexual violence.
A newborn abandoned by a desperate mother should trigger two responses at the same time.
Protect the child. Find out what drove the mother to that point.

Those two responsibilities do not cancel each other.

What society must stop doing

Nigeria also needs to examine the culture of shame surrounding pregnancy. A frightened teenager who discovers she is pregnant should not feel that death, abandonment or self-harm are the only doors left open.

A woman who has been raped should not have to carry both the trauma of the assault and the fear of being rejected by her family.

A poor mother should not be forced to choose between feeding herself and feeding a newborn.

The answer cannot be to excuse abandonment.
Nor can it be to condemn desperate women without asking what support was available before desperation became a crisis.

Every newborn deserves protection. Every mother facing a crisis deserves a safe place to seek help. And every society that keeps finding abandoned babies must ask whether it is providing enough alternatives before the baby is born. ValidViewNetwork reports.
