Four persons have died after a Golf Wagon plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday evening, in a crash that left 10 occupants involved, officials said.
The Kano State Fire Service said the incident happened at about 7:10 p.m. after its Danbatta Division received a distress call from a resident identified as Suleman. The vehicle was said to be travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State when it veered off the road and fell into the dam.
According to the fire service, firefighters rushed to the scene and successfully rescued all 10 victims from the vehicle. Four of them were later confirmed dead after being recovered unconscious and taken to the hospital.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, about 35 years old, and Fatima Danlami, about 40 years old. The identities of the other two victims had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The victims were evacuated to Danbatta General Hospital, where they were handed over for treatment and other necessary procedures.
Preliminary findings by the agency suggested that a burst tyre caused the crash. The fire service urged motorists to drive carefully, especially on highways and near waterways, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, also called on relevant authorities to urgently repair the Tomas Dam embankment, warning that the damaged structure posed a danger to lives and property in the area.
In a separate reminder of the rising toll of road crashes in the state, two people also died on Monday in an accident involving a trailer and a Toyota Corolla at Kwang community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
