TEL AVIV – A 52-year-old man was killed and several others were wounded late Friday night as a barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles targeted central and southern Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Jerusalem and sending residents across the country rushing to bomb shelters.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that several missiles were launched from Iranian territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. While Israel’s multi-layered aerial defense systems intercepted several threats, the Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service reported that a missile impact in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area proved fatal.
According to police reports, the lethal strike involved a dispersing cluster munition missile. The victim, identified as a construction worker who had survived a previous strike on the first day of the war, was reportedly hit by shrapnel roughly 20 meters from an impact site. Paramedics treated him at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead. Two other men in their 50s suffered mild to moderate injuries from submunitions that struck a residential building.
The attack follows a day of intense military activity. Earlier on Friday, Israel conducted precision strikes against Iranian “regime targets,” including the Shahid Khondab heavy water complex in Arak and the Ardakan yellowcake production plant. Iranian state media confirmed the strikes, which Israel stated were aimed at disrupting the production of ballistic missiles and other weaponry.
In a further expansion of the conflict’s geography, the IDF reported early Saturday that it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen. The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the launch, marking their first direct involvement in the current round of hostilities.
”Defensive systems are operating to intercept these threats,” the military stated on its official channels, as search and rescue teams were deployed to at least 11 impact sites across the Tel Aviv metro area. Explosions were also reported near Jericho in the West Bank and over Damascus, where Syrian authorities attributed the sounds to Israeli interceptions of inbound Iranian projectiles.
As of Saturday morning, Major General Shai Klapper, Commander of the Home Front Command, was conducting situational assessments at various impact sites. The strike brings the confirmed number of civilians and foreign nationals killed in Israel by Iranian ballistic fire to 16 since the conflict intensified in late February.
