ICE Arrests Southwest Flight Attendant at Work Over Visa Status

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Federal immigration authorities detained a Southwest Airlines flight attendant while he was on the job in Nashville earlier this month, sparking swift pushback from labor advocates and raising questions over the complex intersection of active asylum claims and employment status.

Lorenzo Thompson, a Jamaican national, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 14. According to federal officials, Thompson originally entered the United States on April 17, 2021, under a visa that expired six months later in October 2021.

“Against our nation’s laws, he overstayed his visa and failed to depart,” an ICE spokesperson said in a statement, noting that Thompson remained cooperative during the encounter. He remains held in ICE custody pending ongoing immigration proceedings.

Federal officials noted that undocumented individuals are occasionally given opportunities to self-deport under specific agency initiatives, but Thompson’s supporters emphasize that his situation involves active legal safeguards.

Community and Union Backing

TWU Local 556, the labor union representing Southwest Airlines flight attendants, swiftly acknowledged the arrest, emphasizing worker welfare.

“Every member deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and we are committed to ensuring this member and their family know they are not alone during this difficult time,” the union stated.

Advocacy groups, including the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), highlighted Thompson’s integration into the aviation workforce, describing him as a dedicated professional who left a profound mark on passengers and colleagues alike.

Pending Asylum and Legal Defense

An online crowdfunding campaign established by close friends to manage mounting legal expenses portrays a drastically different narrative from the standard overstay classification. Organizers state that Thompson fled life-threatening abuse in Jamaica and has pursued lawful status through an active asylum application.

According to campaign details, Thompson maintains a clean record without any criminal infractions and has continuously worked to establish stability and build a future within the United States. Legal representatives are currently navigating bond procedures and administrative hurdles to secure his release as his case proceeds.
