CAPE TOWN, South Africa

For Professor Beatrice Olutoyin Opeolu, the journey from a young girl in Imasai to international academic leadership has taken decades.

Now, she is turning the lessons from that journey into a new book aimed at academics navigating the demanding transition from scholarship to institutional leadership.

Titled From Scholar to Institutional Leader: A Strategic Blueprint for Mid-Career Academics in the Global South, the book will be launched on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Parow Golf Course, South Africa.

The launch is scheduled for 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.The book is designed for academics, researchers, university leaders and professionals preparing to take on broader institutional responsibilities.

It examines the transition from individual academic achievement to leadership, policy influence, team development and institutional impact.

From Imasai To The Global Academic Stage

Opeolu’s story, however, did not begin in a boardroom or an international research conference.

It began in Imasai, Yewa, Ogun State, where she spent the first decade of her life with her mother, grandparents and wider family.

She later attended Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Imasai, and Awori Comprehensive High School, Ipaja, before proceeding to Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere) for her A-level studies.

Her academic journey eventually brought her to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). She obtained her BSc in Environmental Management and Toxicology from FUNAAB in 1995.

She later earned an MSc in Environmental Biology from the University of Ibadan in 2001 and a PhD in Environmental Toxicology from FUNAAB in 2007.

That earlier ValidViewNetwork interview, published on July 18, 2023, documented the personal and professional journey behind the academic career now informing her new book.

A Career Built Beyond The Classroom

Professor Opeolu began her academic career as a Graduate Assistant at FUNAAB in 1997. Her work covered teaching, research and extension services across several areas of environmental science.

She later moved to South Africa in 2008 as a postdoctoral fellow at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Her responsibilities expanded from teaching and research into academic programme coordination and institutional leadership.

In 2011, she became the Extended Curriculum Coordinator in CPUT’s Faculty of Applied Sciences. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and became a Professor in 2018.

Her research has focused heavily on environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, pollution, remediation and the risks posed by contaminants to humans and ecosystems.

Her work has included research into trace metals, organic pollutants, microplastics and other emerging environmental contaminants.

She has also worked on environmental remediation using biomass, microorganisms, activated carbon and nanomaterials.

From Researcher To International Scientific Leader

Opeolu’s career eventually extended beyond university teaching and research.

She became deeply involved with the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), an international scientific organisation focused on environmental science and toxicology.

She has held leadership responsibilities within SETAC Africa and the wider organisation. In 2024, she became President of the SETAC World Council, becoming the first African to hold the position.

Her professional achievements have also included research fellowships, grants, scientific leadership positions, academic programme evaluations and international collaborations.

She has served in various capacities at SETAC conferences across Africa, Europe and North America. She was also named a SETAC Fellow in 2022.

Her work has therefore moved across several levels of academic responsibility. It has taken her from teaching students to supervising researchers, evaluating academic programmes, leading research networks and participating in international scientific decision-making.

Why The New Book Matters

It is against that background that Opeolu’s new book takes on particular significance. The book focuses on a challenge many academics eventually confront.

How does a successful scholar become an effective institutional leader? Academic promotion can reward publications, research grants, teaching and scholarly recognition.

Institutional leadership demands something broader. It requires strategic thinking, people management, collaboration, communication, decision-making and an understanding of how institutions actually function.

Opeolu’s book seeks to address that transition from a practical perspective. Its focus on the Global South is also significant.

Universities across Africa and other developing regions operate within distinct financial, institutional and social realities.

Academic leadership in such environments can therefore require approaches that differ from conventional leadership models developed elsewhere.

A Philosophy Shaped By Experience

Opeolu’s earlier conversation with ValidViewNetwork offered a glimpse into the philosophy behind her career.

She described herself as someone driven by purpose and a desire to demonstrate what is possible regardless of socioeconomic background.

She also spoke about the difficulties she encountered during her education and academic career. Those experiences included bullying, professional challenges and moments when she had to remain resilient while navigating difficult institutional environments.

Yet she continued pursuing her academic goals. Her career subsequently developed into one involving teaching, research, leadership, environmental consultancy and international scientific collaboration.

That experience now provides the foundation for her latest contribution to academic development.

Beyond Personal Achievement

For Opeolu, academic success appears to carry a responsibility beyond personal recognition. Her work has included initiatives aimed at supporting women, young professionals and students.

She has also been involved in academic programme development, community engagement and professional networking.

Her consultancy, BEE Solutions and Consultancy Services, further extends that work into professional development and sustainability-related consultancy.

The new book therefore sits at the intersection of several parts of her career. It draws from scholarship, leadership, mentoring, institutional experience and international collaboration.

The August 14 Launch

The launch of From Scholar to Institutional Leader will take place on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Parow Golf Course in South Africa.

The event will run from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. For academics approaching the middle stages of their careers, the book promises to address a question that becomes increasingly important with experience.

How does one move from being recognised for individual excellence to becoming someone capable of building institutions and developing other people?

Opeolu’s own career offers one answer. Her journey began in Imasai, passed through FUNAAB and the University of Ibadan, crossed into South African academia and eventually reached international scientific leadership.

Now, she is putting those lessons into a blueprint for others. ValidViewNetwork reports that the August 14 launch will mark the formal presentation of a book shaped by decades of academic experience, research leadership and international collaboration.

For Opeolu, the journey from scholar to institutional leader has taken decades. The next chapter is about showing others how to make the same transition.
