The Federal Government has formally initiated the reconstruction of the 122.89-kilometre Kaduna (Mando)-Birnin Gwari Road in Kaduna State. Valued at N178.116bn, the infrastructural undertaking aims to restore a vital transport corridor long plagued by deterioration and insecurity, while facilitating seamless regional trade between Northern Nigeria and the South-West.
Strategic Infrastructure and Economic Renewal
Represented by Kaduna State Governor Senator Uba Sani, President Bola Tinubu stated that the commencement of the project redeems a definitive campaign commitment made ahead of the 2023 general elections. The corridor, originating at Mando near the Kaduna International Airport and terminating at the Niger State boundary, serves as one of the most direct transit routes linking northern states to commercial hubs like Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, and Niger.
Minister of Works Senator David Umahi emphasized the multidimensional impact of the venture during the flag-off ceremony. According to the minister, reviving the route will substantially lower logistics expenses, reinvigorate agricultural output across agrarian settlements, and reinforce security along a path historically characterized by banditry and kidnapping.
Addressing critics alleging an exclusive focus on new constructions, Umahi clarified that the administration is simultaneously rehabilitating numerous abandoned federal highways nationwide. Notable projects cited include the Sokoto-Zamfara-Funtua-Zaria Road, the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and ongoing progress on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Highway, where the initial 118-kilometre stretch has already been completed.
Broader Regional Impacts
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, Mr. Adeladan Rafiu Olarinre, corroborated that the reconstruction aligns with a broader national framework aimed at modernizing federal arteries to stimulate economic expansion. Furthermore, the event highlighted ancillary developments in the state, including federal approval for the 50-kilometre Kaduna Light Rail project valued at approximately $868m.
With the project now officially underway, authorities anticipate that enhanced security measures and modern infrastructure will transform the corridor back into a thriving artery for national integration and commerce.
