A minitruck loaded with tomatoes veered out of control on Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Thursday afternoon, crashing into other vehicles but causing no deaths. Eyewitnesses described the truck slamming across lanes around noon due to suspected brake failure, with one family in a targeted vehicle escaping unharmed by inches. Emergency responders cleared the scene swiftly, highlighting yet another close call on this accident-prone stretch.
Bridge’s Deadly Reputation
Otedola Bridge has long been labeled Lagos’ worst blackspot, with recurring brake failures, overloaded trucks, and structural flaws fueling frequent disasters. Notable past incidents include a 2018 petrol tanker explosion that killed 12 people and torched 54 vehicles. More recently, a March 2025 gas tanker blast under the bridge claimed four lives, destroyed buildings, and injured six others.

Recent Fatal Crashes
In December 2025, a speeding truck triggered a multi-vehicle pileup near the Secretariat end of Otedola Bridge, killing a father, mother, and their child in an Audi while injuring two others. The truck driver fled the scene, leaving LASTMA and police to manage rescues and traffic. Another 2025 event saw a vehicle plunge off the bridge in April, severely injuring the driver.

Ongoing Safety Concerns
Experts point to driver negligence, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate enforcement rather than superstition as root causes. Despite repeated calls for repairs and stricter regulations, the bridge continues to claim lives through tanker fires, container falls, and collisions. Authorities urge motorists to exercise caution on this vital expressway corridor.
