Decades of Silence, One Verdict: Tupac’s Killer Finally Faces Justice

ValidViewNetwork gathered that a Las Vegas jury on Monday, August 31, 2026, found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon for orchestrating the 1996 killing of rap icon Tupac Shakur.

The jury deliberated for just under three hours before reaching its verdict.

Davis, 63, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, now faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

Sentencing has been scheduled for October 13, 2026.

The Case Against Davis

During closing arguments, prosecutors argued that circumstantial evidence and Davis’s own admissions, including details in his memoir, tied him to the crime.

They described Davis as a “shot caller” in the gang who “went hunting” for Shakur.

The defense countered that Davis’s recounting of the shooting in his memoir was “fiction” and pointed to missing investigative records and a lack of direct evidence.

An Emotional Moment for the Shakur Family

As the verdict was read, Shakur’s family was visibly emotional. His sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, was seen crying quietly as family members held hands.

After the conviction, Davis told the judge he intended to appeal.

A Case That Changed Hip-Hop History

Tupac Shakur was wounded in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996, near the Las Vegas Strip and died in a hospital six days later at the age of 25.

He was an award-winning rap artist, activist and actor who sold over 75 million records worldwide, many posthumously.

His murder became one of the most infamous unsolved cases in music history, spawning countless theories and documentaries over three decades. Davis is the only person ever charged in connection with the killing.
