ABUJA — Vice President Kashim Shettima has asserted that lasting marriages are built on character, forgiveness, and humility, cautioning that beauty and material fortune alone are insufficient to weather life’s inevitable storms.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the wedding reception of Aishatu Buratai—daughter of former Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.)—and her husband, Umar Zoru, Shettima emphasized that stable families remain the bedrock of national development and responsible generations.
The high-profile ceremony, held on Saturday at the Tukur & Tukur Farm along the Abuja-Keffi Road in Nasarawa State, drew a distinguished gathering of traditional rulers, senior military officers, top government officials, and well-wishers.
Describing the home as humanity’s oldest and most vital institution, the Vice President urged young couples and society at large to prioritize virtue over superficial visibility.
”Our faith describes marriage as half of religion, and I have always understood why. It is at home that patience, honesty and mercy are tested daily, far from the applause of strangers,” Shettima stated.
He noted that enduring unions demand restraint during times of excess and unwavering loyalty amidst fleeting attachments. Commending both families for their legacy of service, discipline, and restraint, he reminded the newlyweds that a home’s true worth is measured by the intangible values passed quietly from one generation to the next.
