Canadian Mother Delivers Baby While Asleep

​In a rare and startling medical occurrence, a 27-year-old Canadian woman, Carolina Moreno, recently shared a harrowing account of delivering her third child while completely unconscious.

​The incident, which has gained significant traction on social media, unfolded after Moreno was admitted to a hospital for an induced labor. According to the mother, medical teams had initiated the induction process following a positive test for Group B Streptococcus, a condition requiring antibiotic prophylaxis.

While the initial administration of the anesthetic seemed to provide little relief, she continued to receive subsequent doses until the pain subsided enough for her to drift into a deep sleep.

​Unbeknownst to the medical team, the fetus—who had been consistently active throughout the process—had maneuvered into a position that caused the electronic fetal heart monitor to lose the signal. When alarms began to sound, nurses entered the room to readjust the sensors.

​“The alarm went off on the monitor, which happens when the heartbeat isn’t found,” Moreno explained. Initially, the team believed the loss of signal was simply due to her movement in her sleep. However, as the medical staff struggled to regain the heartbeat, anxiety mounted.

​The critical moment arrived when a nurse performed a physical examination of the mother’s abdomen. Upon shifting blankets to better assess the situation, the staff discovered the newborn lying face down and silent beneath the covers. Moreno described the terrifying realization that her son had essentially delivered himself while she remained asleep.
