Bangkok Bar Shaves Customer’s Head Over Unpaid Tab

​BANGKOK — A popular nightlife establishment in Bangkok’s Pinklao district is facing fierce scrutiny and a government inquiry after footage emerged of a bartender using an electric razor to completely shave a female customer’s head. The drastic punishment was administered after the woman allegedly attempted to slip out of the venue without settling a 60,000-baht ($1,812 USD) bill.

​The incident, which took place on August 25, drew widespread attention after local social activist Chalida “Ton Or” Phalamat, founder of the Be One Foundation, brought the viral video to light. According to venue representatives, the customer was notorious in the area for running up tabs at local clubs and restaurants before attempting to skip out. Investigators noted that she allegedly used a fraudulent identification card to gain entry to the host bar.

​Rather than contacting local law enforcement to report the suspected fraud and unpaid services, venue management confronted the woman as she tried to leave. Faced with mounting charges she could not afford, the customer was presented with a bizarre alternative to a police handover: signing a makeshift “hair purchase contract”.

​In the widely circulated video, a staff member can be heard telling the woman that the arrangement reflects fair market value, even offering an extra adjustment to offset the debt. The bartender then sheared off her shoulder-length hair. Management later claimed the harvested hair was designated for a charity donation.

​The spectacle has ignited a fierce public debate regarding business ethics, consent, and vigilante justice in Thailand’s service sector. While some online commentators expressed sympathy for business owners struggling against financial fraud, legal advocates argue that the venue crossed a dangerous line.

​”They contacted me to apologise and admitted that the manager had acted out of anger and impulsiveness,” Phalamat stated, adding that the venue intends to reach out to the victim’s family to negotiate compensation.

​”I sympathise with them and understand that they need to make a profit, but the way they handled this was clearly unlawful,” Phalamat continued. “A hair purchase contract made under duress is void, and shaving someone’s head against their will can amount to assault, coercion and unlawful detention.”

​In response to the public outcry, Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has been urged to launch a formal investigation into the episode. Activists are strongly cautioning commercial establishments against abandoning statutory legal channels in favor of mob rule.

​The controversy highlights a volatile trend of vigilante discipline in the capital. It follows a separate high-profile incident in Bangkok on May 10, when a standoff erupted after a man was forced to shave his head following public outrage over comments mocking religious verses.
