AWKA, NIGERIA – Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested the General Overseer of Day Spring Assembly, Pastor Harrison Charles, following explosive allegations that he systematically converted at least 75 married women into his personal wives and operated an intricate wife-swapping network within his ministry.
The suspect, whose church is located in the Awada area of the commercial hub, Onitsha, was apprehended by operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit after a wave of viral video confessions from distraught victims and their relatives triggered widespread public outrage.
The Crackdown on ‘Fake Pastors’
The arrest is part of an ongoing, aggressive crackdown by the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration targeting fraudulent religious leaders across the state. Just last week, the government arraigned eight self-proclaimed clerics on various charges exploiting the populace.
Confirming the latest arrest, Dr. Ejimofor Opara, a media aide to Governor Soludo, revealed that a joint investigation by the Anambra State Police Command and the state government has been officially launched.
Startling Discoveries and Confessions
According to state officials, the details emerging from the preliminary investigation are startling. During a raid on the cleric’s residence, security operatives discovered 11 infants.
”During his arrest, about eleven babies were found in his home,” Dr. Opara stated. “He claimed to be the father of these eleven babies and that they are from eleven of his wives. He also claimed that he does not know the number of wives he has married or the total number of children he has.”
The arrest has opened a floodgate of allegations from former congregants and victims’ families, who have taken to social media and local advocacy platforms, such as the Brekete Family program, to share their ordeals. Accusations against Pastor Charles extend beyond the forceful dissolution of marriages; victims allege he routinely coerced husbands within his church into swapping wives, and in some extreme instances, allegedly took both mothers and their biological daughters as his spouses. Further unverified allegations regarding a private cemetery on his property are also being evaluated by security agencies.
State Government Calls for Witnesses
The Anambra State Government has vowed to prosecute the matter to the logical conclusion of the law. Prince Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, has taken over the coordination of the state’s civic response, urging members of the public with vital evidence to step forward.
”While investigations continue, we are urging anyone with additional information, testimonies, or facts regarding the activities of this suspect to immediately report to the state government,” Emeakayi said.
The suspect remains in police custody as forensic accounting of his alleged victims and profiling of the rescued children continue.
