Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim vowed to remain committed to his tactical philosophy despite mounting pressure following a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Since his appointment in November 2024, Amorim’s tenure has been marked by poor results, with just eight wins from 31 Premier League games, ranking him among the club’s least successful managers in the post-war era.
Amorim’s United currently sit 14th in the Premier League, having suffered their worst start to the season in 33 years. The criticism has focused largely on an unbalanced squad, with the club’s heavy investment in attacking players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko overshadowed by persistent midfield frailties. Key players such as Bruno Fernandes have been deployed out of position, often tasked with defensive duties that do not suit their strengths. The midfield pairing of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte has struggled to control matches, forcing the team to bypass midfield play entirely.
After Sunday’s defeat, Amorim made it clear he would not alter his coaching philosophy, saying, “I will do everything I can for Manchester United. I’m suffering more than the fans. I won’t change my philosophy. If INEOS want it changed, you change the man.” His stubborn approach has led to calls for a managerial change from some quarters, though club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has signaled patience, given the squad rebuilding underway and injury setbacks.
Amorim’s future may hinge on tactical reshaping, including possible midfield changes and the challenging decision to drop captain Bruno Fernandes in favor of promising youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who is seen by some experts as a dynamic alternative capable of injecting energy into the side.
If a managerial change were to occur, Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth manager who led the Cherries to a record points tally last season, is emerging as a leading candidate. Iraola’s high-energy style is viewed as potentially complementary to United’s attacking assets. Other names in the frame include Oliver Glasner and Xavi, though a mid-season replacement is deemed risky by observers, with many suggesting any new appointment may wait until the end of the 2025–26 campaign.
Former United coach Rene Meulensteen expressed surprise at the board’s continued faith in Amorim, predicting eventual dismissal unless results improve. Meanwhile, the club seeks to stabilize a season that has so far fallen far short of expectations, with a strong emphasis on patient squad building and strategic recruitment over the coming transfer windows.
