Airlines Fault NCAA Over 4,801 Flight Disruptions Report

Nigeria’s flight-delay problem has produced a new argument, this time over the numbers used to describe it.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority reported 4,801 disruptions out of 7,961 domestic flights operated in August, with Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines among the airlines recording large numbers.

But the airlines say the figures do not adequately capture the reasons behind the disruptions.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Air Peace says the NCAA used 1,864 flights in calculating its August figures, while the airline says it actually operated 2,564 flights during the month.

Air Peace also argues that only 391 of its August disruptions were caused by internal factors, while the remainder were linked to issues including airport congestion, weather, bird strikes, airport facilities, industrial action and ground-handling problems.

United Nigeria Airlines similarly argued that the regulator’s data should distinguish between delays airlines can control and disruptions caused by wider aviation infrastructure and operating conditions.

The disagreement matters because passengers do not experience a delay as a statistical category. They experience missed connections, lost time, cancelled plans and additional costs.

At the same time, airlines cannot simply transfer every delay to airports, weather or other operators.

Technical failures, maintenance problems and poor operational planning can also create disruptions.

ValidViewNetwork had earlier reported concerns over persistent congestion and operational difficulties affecting Nigerian airports.The current dispute therefore calls for better data rather than competing narratives.

The NCAA should explain its methodology, while airlines should provide verifiable operational records supporting their alternative figures.

Passengers ultimately need one thing from the system: accurate information and accountability when flights fail to operate as scheduled.

The argument over the numbers should become an opportunity to improve the numbers themselves.

Transparent, independently verifiable data would make it easier to identify who is responsible for each type of disruption and what needs to change, ValidViewNetwork reports.
