The Benin Electricity Distribution Company has officially announced a comprehensive salary upward review for its workforce, slated to take effect from December 1, 2026. The development follows successful high-level negotiations between the utility provider’s management and major organized labour unions.
Resolution Grounded in Mutual Consensus
The agreement was successfully finalized during a pivotal tripartite meeting held on November 6, 2026. The negotiation sessions brought together top management executives and key labour representatives, including:
- Jonathan Lawani – Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, BEDC
- Dr. Innocent Lord-Douglas – Deputy General Secretary, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC)
- Mbang Ntukubes – Assistant General Secretary (Field Services), National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE)
Operating across Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti states, BEDC finalized consequential salary adjustments designed to improve the standard of living for employees and foster enduring industrial harmony.
”The successful conclusion of this joint negotiation and review process reflects our shared commitment to staff welfare and the overall performance of BEDC,” said Acting MD Jonathan Lawani.
Addressing Past Industrial Discontent
The breakthrough comes in the wake of previous tensions and industrial actions that had drawn intervention from regulatory bodies. Earlier, the Edo State Government—through the Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo—alongside the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, waded into the labour dispute.
Those initial conciliation talks addressed critical operational concerns, such as:
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) for field staff
- Staff promotions, welfare, and salary harmonization
- Immediate restoration of overtime payments
- Strict timelines for resolving outstanding employee grievances
While welcoming the final agreement, management noted that the recent industrial disruptions could have been averted. Lawani pointed out that work stoppages led to avoidable revenue losses, reputational strains, and unnecessary hardships for electricity consumers across their franchise states.
Navigating Financial Realities and OPEX Frameworks
During the engagement, the company’s leadership provided transparency regarding BEDC’s broader financial ecosystem. Management emphasized that the company’s operational expenditure (OPEX) framework has remained unchanged since 2013, despite soaring operational overheads and current macroeconomic challenges.
Furthermore, management clarified that accessing the company’s full approved OPEX allocation is strictly tied to meeting pre-determined collection performance thresholds. Falling short of these targets triggers reduced allocations, underlining the delicate balance required between boosting employee welfare and maintaining business sustainability.
