LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A Thursday evening routine response turned into tragedy near the Denver metropolitan area when a suspect opened fire on law enforcement, killing a Lakewood police agent and wounding three others.
The violent confrontation unfolded at approximately 6:30 p.m. on November 5 near the bustling intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. According to Lakewood Police Public Information Officer John Romero, officers were responding to a call about a suspicious person allegedly linked to an earlier hit-and-run incident.
The suspect was attempting to board a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus when law enforcement approached. Within seconds, the individual drew a weapon and unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the agents.
”Within seconds of agents approaching the suspect, the suspect opened fire on our agents,” Romero stated during a late-night press briefing.
Four officers sustained gunshot wounds in the ambush. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, one of the agents succumbed to their injuries. The identities of the fallen officer and the surviving personnel have not yet been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin.
The suspect was struck by return fire from the officers and was pronounced dead at the scene. An innocent civilian was also caught in the crossfire and hospitalized with injuries, though updates on their condition and the three surviving officers were withheld pending further medical evaluations.
In the wake of the tragedy, an emotional Romero offered condolences to the department’s extended family, emphasizing solidarity within the ranks. Late Thursday night, a solemn police procession escorted the fallen officer’s body from Denver Health to honor their ultimate sacrifice.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed profound grief over the incident, thanking first responders who continuously run toward danger to protect the public.
”Law enforcement put their lives on the line for our safety every day, and I am heartbroken to learn that a Lakewood Police Agent was killed in the line of duty this evening,” Polis said in a statement. “My heart goes out to their family and friends.”
The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team has taken charge of the independent investigation, with active assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Colorado State Patrol. Authorities expect to release further details as the investigation unfolds.
