Nigeria’s Ebola index case, a Ugandan-born woman married to a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, has been medically evacuated from the country, according to reports by Arise TV.
The development was reported on Monday morning, with the patient’s medical evacuation flight departing from Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, ValidViewNetwork reports.
THE EVACUATION
The patient is Nigeria’s first Ebola case in more than a decade. Nigerian health authorities and the Swiss foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the evacuation.
THE CONFIRMED CASE
Nigeria confirmed the woman’s infection on October 20, 2026, after she had travelled to Abuja from Uganda.
Swiss authorities said the woman contracted Ebola during a visit to Uganda in September
The World Health Organisation said the information it had received did not show that the woman herself had travelled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an outbreak has been reported.
THE DISPUTE OVER ORIGIN
Ugandan officials have challenged the conclusion that the woman contracted the virus in Uganda.
Uganda’s Health Minister, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, said relatives who had previously visited DRC had met the woman in a Kampala suburb, and questioned whether that possible route of exposure had been ruled out.
“We should speak science, not politics,” she said.
Ugandan officials said security footage showed no physical interaction between the woman and the relatives. Nigerian authorities said genetic testing found closely related viruses in the two cases, but no direct link had been established.
THE CONTACT TRACING
The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and Prevention had placed 53 primary contacts under surveillance, including healthcare workers, household members, domestic staff and personnel involved in collecting samples from the patient.
The NCDC also approved a weekly payment of ₦100,000 for quarantined contacts to cover accommodation, feeding and family maintenance.
WHY IT MATTERS
The evacuation of the index case does not end Nigeria’s Ebola scare. The contacts remain under surveillance for the 21-day incubation period.
The source of the infection is still being investigated. And the diplomatic tension between Nigeria and Uganda over where the woman contracted the virus remains unresolved.
For Nigeria, the evacuation is a relief in one sense: the patient is no longer in the country.
