Florida Republican Rep. Randy Fine said he will demand the expulsion of Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar from the U.S. House if the Justice Department determines she committed immigration fraud.
Fine, a House Freedom Caucus member, made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital following a federal court filing that identified Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” with “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” listed as an alias. The filing, signed by U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, relates to applications concerning a search warrant for Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence. It has intensified long-standing questions about her identity and immigration records, though it does not itself establish fraud.
“I assume that she’s not a citizen, so we might not even have to do that,” Fine said. “You can’t be in Congress if you’re not a citizen of the United States, but if it isn’t automatic, I absolutely will demand expulsion immediately.”
He predicted Democrats would try to block any accountability measures, saying, “I don’t think Democrats think you should have to be American. They don’t believe in borders. They’ve made that clear. They don’t believe in America.”
Omar, born in Somalia, became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. She has denied any wrongdoing and described the federal investigation as politically motivated. Her office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Fine’s remarks. In a separate statement addressing the name claims, Omar called accusations of a “fake name” categorically false and without basis in fact.
The comments come after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12 as part of a probe into possible false statements on immigration and naturalization documents.
Authorities seized her cellphone and issued grand jury subpoenas to family members. Investigators have examined aspects of her family’s immigration history, including questions around documentation related to her path to citizenship and long-circulating allegations involving her former marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Those sibling-marriage claims remain unproven; Omar has denied them, previously responding “not to my knowledge” when asked if she was related to her ex-husband. Reports indicate DNA evidence and other materials form part of the inquiry.
Fine noted that a separate probe into Omar’s financial disclosures began under the Biden administration in 2024. He has previously called for her denaturalization and deportation and criticized broader aspects of immigration and welfare policy involving Somali communities in Minnesota.
Under the Constitution, the House may expel a member, but the step requires a two-thirds vote. A criminal investigation or allegation alone does not automatically remove a sitting member. Fine has indicated he would pursue a formal resolution if the Justice Department’s findings support it.
The developments add to political pressure on Omar as she seeks reelection, with the probe drawing sharp partisan reactions and calls from some Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, for her resignation. No charges have been filed.
