London’s Metropolitan Police have confirmed they received and handled correspondence containing allegations against Thomas Markle Sr., sparking an internal review into whether the matter should be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The force announced that records indicate a letter arrived in January 2019—addressing alleged offenses committed outside the United Kingdom. Because the details raised security concerns regarding the Duchess of Sussex, the correspondence was funneled directly to the Met’s Protection Command.
According to Scotland Yard, the contents were reviewed and forwarded exclusively to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. Investigators confirmed that the claims were not disseminated to other domestic or international law enforcement agencies.
The disclosure follows a public statement from Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, expressing that she was “deeply distressed” by separate reports surfacing from an ongoing investigation involving her father in the Philippines. The Duchess indicated she had been informed of troubling material via police channels, previously recalling its receipt in late 2018. Representatives for the Duchess explained that the slight discrepancy in timelines—pointing to early 2019 via police logs—was an understandable consequence of the passage of time.
Thomas Markle Sr. has strongly denied all allegations, characterizing them as entirely false. As Scotland Yard evaluates its historical handling of the correspondence, international inquiries into the separate allegations originating from the Philippines remain active.
