The Lagos State Police Command has detained four officers and disbanded their tactical team following a viral video allegedly showing them harassing a young man in Odogunyan, Ikorodu.
The decision was announced by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, in a statement on Friday.
THE INVESTIGATION
Adebisi said the command began investigating immediately after receiving the video, which showed the officers confronting the young man.
“Immediately we got the video, we investigated, and the men were identified to be personnel of the Lagos State Police Command attached to Imota Tactical Team there in Ikorodu,” she said .
The officers were summoned to the office of the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, where the decision to detain them pending disciplinary proceedings was taken.
“They gave the verdict that these officers will be detained immediately pending the disciplinary proceedings and also the entire team be disbanded,” Adebisi added .
THE WARNING
The command said it would not tolerate impunity and warned that officers must discharge their duties with integrity and humility.
“No uniform is a licence to intimidate, harass, or violate the rights of any citizen,” the command stated .It also commended residents for helping identify the officers, saying their cooperation enabled the police to apprehend them within a short period, ValidViewNetwork reports.
WHY IT MATTERS
The swift action by the Lagos Police Command is a rare example of accountability in a system where officers who abuse their powers often escape consequences.
The disbandment of the entire tactical team sends a message that the misconduct of a few can have consequences for the unit as a whole.
For the young man in the video, the action is a measure of justice.
For the public, it is a reminder that speaking up can lead to change. The viral video could have been ignored. The officers could have been transferred.

The team could have continued its operations. Instead, the Lagos Police Command chose accountability. It is a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.
