The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has confirmed that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has slapped national team head coach Hossam Hassan, team manager Ibrahim Hassan, and forward Mostafa Zico with heavy international bans.
The sanctions stem from furious post-match reactions following Egypt’s heartbreaking 3–2 Round of 16 defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta on July 6. The Pharaohs had initially stunned the tournament by taking a commanding 2–0 lead, only to watch it slip away amid controversial refereeing decisions—including a crucial disallowed goal and a denied penalty claim.
In the wake of the elimination, an incensed Hossam Hassan lambasted the officiating crew in a fiery press conference, declaring:
”We have been cheated unfairly today; we have suffered injustice… We haven’t seen respect or fair play.”
According to the EFA, Hossam and his twin brother Ibrahim have each been handed three-match suspensions, while forward Mostafa Zico received a five-match ban for post-match verbal altercations with officials.
The heavy penalties deal a significant blow to the Pharaohs’ immediate plans. The coaching duo will likely miss crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Malawi in November, alongside the opening fixture of the March international window. Meanwhile, Zico will remain sidelined from international duty well into June.
The EFA has formally requested official legal justifications from FIFA to evaluate grounds for an immediate appeal. However, the disciplinary measures have found backing from the upper echelons of world football officiating; FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina staunchly defended the match officials, warning that unchecked public attacks on referees compromise the integrity of the sport and expose officials to dangerous personal threats.
