Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have moved to check the growing influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his Rainbow Coalition, resolving that they will support only candidates produced by the APC in the 2027 general elections.
The APC governors Wike Rainbow Coalition standoff has become the most significant internal dispute within the ruling party ahead of the next election cycle.
THE RESOLUTION
According to gathered reports, the APC governors have taken a firm position on the activities of the Rainbow Coalition, a political grouping associated with Wike that has been mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while simultaneously endorsing candidates outside the APC in several states.
The governors’ position is straightforward: they will back President Tinubu for re-election, but they will not support candidates from other parties in their own states. In their view, the APC must contest and win from top to bottom, presidency, governorship, National Assembly and state assemblies, on a single party ticket.
The governors are understood to have communicated this position through the Progressive Governors Forum, the body that coordinates the activities of APC governors across the country.
WHO IS NYESOM WIKE?
Nyesom Wike is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a former governor of Rivers State. A two-term governor who left office in 2023, he was appointed to the FCT portfolio by President Tinubu in August 2023, a move that surprised many observers given his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike has never formally defected to the APC. He remains a member of the PDP while serving in an APC-led federal government, an arrangement that has made him one of the most controversial figures in Nigerian politics.
His political machine in Rivers State has been in open conflict with the state’s PDP governor, Siminalayi Fubara, a dispute that has spilled into the courts, the state House of Assembly and, at times, the streets.
THE RAINBOW COALITION
The Rainbow Coalition is a political grouping that Wike has been building as a vehicle for supporting President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. Its logic is that Tinubu needs support beyond the APC’s traditional structures, and that figures like Wike, with influence in the South-South and connections across party lines, can deliver votes the APC cannot secure on its own.
The problem is what happens down-ballot.
If the Rainbow Coalition endorses Tinubu for president while backing non-APC candidates for governor, Senate and House of Representatives, it directly undermines the APC’s electoral architecture in those states.
THE GOVERNORS’ POSITION
The APC governors’ position, as reported, is that this arrangement is unacceptable. They argue that the APC cannot simultaneously support Tinubu at the top and concede the rest of the ballot to other parties.
Party structures exist to win elections across the board, and any arrangement that weakens those structures in individual states damages the party as a whole.
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has publicly aligned with the governors. He said he had no problem with anyone supporting Tinubu, but added that the governors were promoting their own party in their states and would support only APC candidates.
“As a party, we will not choose for other parties. So, for example, I can’t enforce on Wike what he should support. He has a right to express what he wants to do. He says he will support us,” Yilwatda said.
“I am not opposed to anybody who wants to support President Bola Tinubu. The governors’ position is that they are promoting their own party in their states, they will support only APC.”

The dispute is not merely about election logistics. It is about control of the APC’s future. If the Rainbow Coalition succeeds in shaping the 2027 ballot across multiple states, it would establish Wike as a kingmaker within the ruling party, despite not being a member of it.
That prospect is unacceptable to governors who built their own political machines on APC platforms. There is also a more personal dimension.
Several APC governors have had to contend with Wike’s influence in their states, particularly in the South-South and South-East. His support for non-APC candidates in those states is seen not as pragmatism but as an attempt to install loyalists who would owe him, not the party.
THE PARTY’S DILEMMA
The APC faces a genuine dilemma.Tinubu needs Wike’s support in the South-South, where the PDP and Labour Party remain competitive. Wike’s influence could help deliver votes the APC cannot secure alone.
But accepting Wike’s arrangement means accepting that the APC will not compete in some states, an admission that the party’s structures are insufficient and that it depends on outside actors to win.
The governors have drawn a line. Whether the presidency shares their view is the crucial question.
WHY IT MATTERS
The standoff has significant implications for 2027. If the APC governors prevail, the party will contest every position on its own platform, which strengthens internal discipline but may weaken its reach in states where it lacks strong structures.
If Wike prevails, the APC could become a coalition of convenience in which candidates are selected through arrangements outside the party, weakening the party’s identity and empowering non-members.
Either way, the outcome will shape how the APC contests the most important election since 2015.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the APC governors have taken a firm position against the Rainbow Coalition’s down-ballot ambitions. Wike has not yet responded publicly to the governors’ resolution.
