GLASGOW — A 54-year-old man was handed a life sentence on Monday, ordered to serve a minimum of 22 years behind bars for the frenzied and brutal murder of his young partner.
Alexander Brennan was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow for the August 2024 slaying of 23-year-old Brodie MacGregor, a mother whose life was cut short inside her flat on Elmvale Street in the city’s Springburn area.
Presiding judge Lord Scott condemned Brennan for displaying a “wicked disregard” for human life, highlighting that the victim offered no serious physical threat during the unprovoked assault.
During the trial, harrowing medical evidence revealed that Ms. MacGregor suffered a staggering 78 distinct injuries to her head and body. Forensic pathologist Dr. Julie McAdam likened the severity of the blunt and sharp-force trauma—inflicted using glass bottles, broken fragments, and a microwave plate—to injuries sustained from high-velocity impacts or falling from a building. The court heard that the young mother was left alive for roughly an hour after the assault, during which time Brennan failed to seek emergency medical help, instead focusing on concealing his crime.
Investigators detailed how Brennan attempted to cover his tracks by disposing of blood-stained clothing in a local charity bin and fleeing to the Falkirk area before his eventual arrest.
Sentencing Brennan, Lord Scott factored in a statutory domestic abuse aggravation, noting that the minimum 22-year punishment part ensures the killer will spend at least until his mid-70s in prison before he can be considered for parole.
Police Scotland welcomed the verdict, emphasizing that tackling violence against women and girls remains an absolute priority for law enforcement.
