Burnham Backs Saudi Air Defence to Ease UK Living Costs

​Prime Minister Andy Burnham has authorised a limited deployment of British military assets to assist Saudi Arabia in repelling missile and drone attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi movement.

​En route to New York for his high-stakes debut at the United Nations General Assembly and his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump, Burnham defended the intervention as a necessary measure to protect British economic interests and stabilize soaring domestic energy costs.

​Under the agreement, a single Royal Air Force (RAF) Voyager refuelling aircraft stationed in Cyprus will provide temporary, defensive air-to-air refuelling support to Saudi jets over a period of several weeks. Downing Street stressed that the mission is strictly defensive—aimed at intercepting incoming threats and safeguarding critical regional infrastructure—rather than supporting offensive strikes.

​The decision follows a renewed escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict. Houthi rebels recently launched a ballistic missile targeting the Saudi capital of Riyadh and imposed an effective blockade on shipping through the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Red Sea chokepoints.

​Burnham warned that the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East has severely disrupted global shipping routes and oil supplies, driving up inflation, surging oil prices, and inflating government borrowing costs. With a challenging domestic budget looming next month, the Prime Minister argued that keeping maritime pathways open and safeguarding the world’s top oil exporter from disruptions is vital to easing cost-of-living pressures on British households.

​The military deployment adds a sharp diplomatic dimension to Burnham’s schedule in Manhattan. Aside from addressing world leaders, the Prime Minister is set to sit down with President Trump to urge a swift de-escalation of hostilities involving Iran and to press for international cooperation in securing the Strait of Hormuz.
