Candidate Extortion: JAMB Sacks Employee, Warns Staff Against Misconduct

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has terminated the appointment of one of its staff members for extorting unsuspecting candidates, turning its anti-corruption message inward.

JAMB announced the disciplinary action in its Monday bulletin, saying the decision formed part of its effort to protect the integrity of the admission and examination process.

The identity of the staff member was not disclosed.

Not Just External Fraudsters

JAMB said the action was intended to demonstrate that its campaign against fraudulent practices applies to its own workforce as well as people outside the organisation.

The board warned staff against conduct capable of undermining its credibility or exploiting candidates and members of the public.

It said employees found guilty of misconduct would face sanctions under established rules.

The issue matters because candidates seeking admission often operate from a position of uncertainty.

They are waiting for examination results, admission offers, corrections, verification and other processes that can affect their educational future.

That environment can make candidates vulnerable to people who claim to have special access to the system.

Accountability Must Start Inside

JAMB’s action therefore addresses more than one employee.It also raises the broader question of how public institutions protect people who depend on their services.

A zero-tolerance policy is meaningful only when complaints are investigated and proven misconduct attracts consequences.

The board says that is the direction it is taking.

For candidates, the message is equally important: official admission and examination processes should not require unofficial payments to staff members.

Where a candidate is asked for money in exchange for a service that should follow an established procedure, the transaction can become a pathway for exploitation.

JAMB said its efforts to protect the integrity of the system must begin from within.
