2027: Sowore Promises 24-Hour Electricity Within Three Years

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has promised to deliver uninterrupted electricity across Nigeria within three years if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Sowore said his proposed approach would involve dismantling the existing national electricity grid and replacing it with regional grids powered by a combination of solar, gas, hydro and biogas.

He made the promise during an interview while outlining his plans for the 2027 election.

Sowore said Nigeria would need more than 60,000 megawatts of electricity to restore the economy to what he described as a productive level.

“I will give you that in less than three years and I mean it. I’m serious. I have done my research and I figured out how it will work and I know what to do to change it and which is what to put where.”

His proposal comes after years of problems in Nigeria’s power sector, including inadequate generation and distribution capacity, transmission constraints, infrastructure failures and repeated grid disturbances.

A Regional Grid Proposal

Sowore said Nigeria’s electricity system should be decentralised so that different regions can generate and distribute power based partly on the resources available in their areas.

The proposal forms part of a wider programme he has presented ahead of the 2027 election. He has also proposed a ₦500,000 monthly living minimum wage, free education, one million public mixed-income homes and changes to tenancy laws.

On healthcare, he has proposed greater use of telemedicine and improvements to public hospitals, while also calling for stronger primary healthcare so that tertiary hospitals are not overwhelmed by cases that could be handled elsewhere.

From Promise to Implementation

ValidViewNetwork reports that the central question surrounding the electricity pledge is not simply how much power Sowore says Nigeria should generate, but how the proposed transition would be financed, regulated and implemented.

Moving towards regional electricity systems would require major investment in generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, alongside coordination with existing electricity-sector institutions and state-level structures.

Sowore has said his proposed government would fund broader reforms by cutting government waste, recovering unpaid oil royalties and blocking financial leakages.

Whether those measures would generate enough funding for the scale of investment required is a question for further scrutiny of the AAC’s manifesto, costing and implementation plan.

The three-year electricity target is therefore a campaign promise at this stage, not an achieved result.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the 2027 election debate on electricity is increasingly moving beyond the familiar promise to improve power supply to questions of generation capacity, grid structure, financing and measurable delivery timelines.

Sowore’s proposal adds another set of targets to that debate. ValidViewNetwork reports.
