UNILORIN lecturer detained at dawn, driven towards Kogi

ILORIN — Police officers took a University of Ilorin political science lecturer from his home in the early hours of Wednesday, according to people familiar with the operation, and later headed towards neighbouring Kogi State. As of Thursday morning, neither the Kwara nor Kogi police command had publicly confirmed a charge, a detention location or the legal basis for the arrest.

Chief Elijah Ola Olorunsuwa, who teaches in the Department of Political Science, was collected at about 5.00 a.m. from his residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, sources told reporters. They said about eight officers arrived in a black Hilux pickup and that the convoy subsequently left Ilorin in the direction of Kogi.

The reason for the operation was not stated at the time the first report was filed.

Major news outlets said they could not independently establish whether Olorunsuwa had been formally detained, which station he was taken to, or whether any charge had been filed.

Monday Job Sesere, a Kogi-based public commentator, said the arrest was ordered by the Kogi State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd). That claim had not been independently verified. Omodara, a prominent security official in the Ahmed Usman Ododo administration, has previously led community security operations in Kogi West, including public parades of suspects in kidnapping-related sweeps.

Kwara State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, told reporters she was not aware of the reported arrest. She added that if officers from Kogi had carried it out, “I am sure that it was not done illegally. The policemen from Kogi would have fulfilled all the protocols for interstate arrest.” She directed further enquiries to the Kogi command.

Attempts to reach the Kogi Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, were unsuccessful. A text message seeking comment had not been delivered by the time the original report was published.

Olorunsuwa is listed on the university’s profile as a lecturer whose interests include comparative politics, elections, political parties, legislative governance, federalism and Nigerian government. He is also National Publicity Secretary of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association, a position he took after the association’s congress in August 2024.

He is from Oke-Offin in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. Community records and local reports describe him as a long-standing figure in Okun and Bunu student and hometown associations. He served as National President of the Oke-Offin Development Association until late 2025, when he stepped down after a four-year tenure. In February 2025 the Kogi State Government identified him in that role during the inauguration of community projects in Oke-Offin. Commander Omodara had earlier occupied the same association presidency before Olorunsuwa succeeded him.

Born on 11 September 1979, Olorunsuwa studied political science at the University of Ilorin after earlier schooling in Bunu and a diploma at Kogi State Polytechnic. His published academic work includes writing on kidnapping and insecurity, intra-party conflict, youth participation and public administration.

The reported arrest comes as political activity in Kogi State intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections. Olorunsuwa has been an outspoken commentator on Kogi politics and community affairs, though no official statement has linked that activity to Wednesday’s operation.

Interstate arrests in Nigeria require coordination between commands. Until Kogi police speak, the public record remains limited to witness accounts of a dawn raid in Ilorin, an unverified allegation about who ordered it, and a Kwara police response that neither confirms nor denies the event. Family, the university and civil-society groups had not issued detailed public statements by Thursday morning.

Further reporting will depend on whether the lecturer is produced in court, granted access to counsel, or formally charged.
