1.5m for a Job That Never Existed: 47 Cross River Job Seekers Scammed

There is a cruel arithmetic behind unemployment: the more desperate someone becomes for a job, the more vulnerable that person can become to anyone promising one.

That desperation has allegedly cost 47 job seekers in Cross River State a combined ₦51.8 million, after fraudsters reportedly offered them local government positions that did not exist.

According to the Cross River State Local Government Service Commission, the victims were allegedly charged as much as ₦1.5 million each for the supposed appointments.

The fake jobs that attracted desperate applicants

The alleged fraud centred on supposed vacancies within Cross River’s local government system.

Job seekers were reportedly approached with promises of appointments, creating the impression that they could secure government employment if they paid the required sums.

The commission said 47 people had been defrauded, with the total amount allegedly reaching ₦51.8 million.

At the individual level, payments of up to ₦1.5 million show how valuable the promise of a government job had become to some of those targeted.

But there was one problem: according to the commission, the jobs were not real.

The victims therefore may have lost far more than an application fee. Some may also have incurred debts while pursuing jobs they believed could provide long-term financial security.

A major warning emerging from the case is the need for job seekers to verify recruitment announcements before making payments.

Legitimate government recruitment exercises normally have identifiable authorities, official procedures and verifiable documentation.

Applicants should therefore be cautious when individuals demand large sums in exchange for guaranteed appointments.

The commission’s allegation also raises a separate question of enforcement.

If individuals collected ₦51.8 million by falsely representing themselves as able to provide government employment, investigators will need to establish who was behind the scheme, how the victims were recruited, where the money went and whether anyone connected to the public service assisted the operation.

Those questions should be answered through investigation and evidence, rather than assumption.
