The Kano PDP governorship ticket has changed hands again, putting the son of Nigeria’s former military Head of State back at the centre of the state’s 2027 political contest.
The Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State has selected Muhammad Sani Abacha as its governorship candidate after the party’s previous candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalha, withdrew from the race.
The decision was reached at an expanded state executive committee meeting in Kano, where the party conducted what it described as an affirmation and replacement primary.
Kano PDP chairman Bello Gambo Bichi said the process followed Dalha’s withdrawal after consultations among party stakeholders.
The chairman also said the replacement process was conducted in line with the party’s constitution and applicable electoral laws.
That point is important because political parties cannot simply change candidates outside the legal framework governing nominations.
Sani Abacha is not new to Kano’s governorship contest. His emergence now represents a return to the political stage after his earlier participation in the 2023 race.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the development should therefore be understood first as a change in the PDP’s candidate, rather than automatically as evidence that the party has gained or lost electoral strength.
The political significance will depend on what follows: whether the party remains united, how other political forces respond, the eventual list of candidates and, ultimately, what voters decide.
ValidViewNetwork had earlier reported that the 2027 political contest is already producing shifting alliances and changing calculations across several states.
But political calculations are not election results. The PDP’s responsibility now is to ensure that its internal processes remain lawful and transparent.
Any disagreement over the ticket should be addressed through the party’s constitutional procedures and, where necessary, the courts.
Political competition is legitimate; the process through which candidates emerge must remain within the law, because no political ambition is above the Constitution, ValidViewNetwork reports.
